What is a Maltese called in Chinese?

The reason the characters look arbitrary is that 马尔济斯 is a transliteration, a translation by sound rather than by meaning. Chinese borrows most foreign breed names this way: scribes pick characters whose pronunciation approximates the English word and accept whatever those characters happen to mean on their own. So 马 (mǎ, horse), 尔 (ěr), 济 (jì) and 斯 (sī) are not describing the dog; strung together they just chase the sound of "Maltese". The occasional variant 玛尔济斯 swaps in 玛 (a jade character) for a softer first syllable, but it is the same word.

Ask a phone app to translate "Maltese" and it weighs the adjective (of Malta) far more heavily than the rare dog word, so it confidently returns 马耳他, the country. That is correct English-to-Chinese and useless at the pet shop. The safe habit is to add the animal on purpose: search or say 马尔济斯犬 or 马耳他犬 rather than the bare 马耳他, and the ambiguity disappears.
